This Sourdough Garlic Bread is crispy, aromatic, and made with simple ingredients like garlic, herbs, and olive oil—perfect as a side, snack, or base for sandwiches.

Quick and easy sourdough garlic bread is perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, creating a delicious contrast in every bite—like a mix between crunchy croutons and warm bread dipped in olive oil.
Its rich garlic flavor combined with high-quality olive oil brings a touch of Mediterranean warmth, while the addition of butter adds a subtle French-inspired richness.
This sourdough garlic bread is simply toasted bread coated in a fragrant garlic and herb mixture, making it the perfect addition to soups, stews, sauces, or even as a flavorful snack on its own.

How to choose the best ingredients for Sourdough Garlic Bread
Sourdough bread: Use a good-quality sourdough loaf for the best flavor and texture. If you have time, homemade sourdough is even better. You can also substitute with French bread like a baguette, or even regular sandwich bread.
Olive oil: Extra virgin olive oil adds the best flavor, but you can use other oils suitable for cooking, like vegetable or avocado oil.
Butter: Combining butter with olive oil gives a richer, more balanced flavor. If you prefer, you can use only olive oil for a dairy-free version.
Garlic: Fresh garlic is best for a bold, aromatic flavor, but garlic powder can be used as a quick alternative.
Paprika: Adds color and a mild depth of flavor. You can mix sweet paprika with smoked paprika or add a pinch of chili powder for extra heat.
Parsley: Fresh parsley adds brightness and color. You can also use frozen parsley, but dried parsley will have a milder flavor.

Top Tip for Success
If you're going to make this recipe, make sure to follow this top tip!
- If you have leftover or slightly stale bread, don’t throw it away—it’s perfect for making garlic bread.
- You can slice the bread in advance and freeze it, so you can make garlic bread anytime you need it.
- For extra flavor, add about 1 tablespoon of grated Parmesan to the garlic mixture.
- To make it more cheesy, sprinkle with hard cheeses like Gouda, Cheddar, or Monterey Jack before baking.
- For a deeper, sweeter flavor, use roasted garlic instead of fresh garlic.
Sourdough Garlic Bread step-by-step instructions
You will need a small saucepan to melt the butter and heat the oil, a brush (I recommend silicone versions; they are more durable) to brush the bread with the mixture, a baking sheet, a piece of parchment paper, and, of course, a sharp knife.
Step 1: Cut six slices of bread. Peel and finely chop the garlic cloves or mince. If you have fresh parsley, wash it, pat it dry with a paper towel, and chop it finely.
Step 2: Melt the butter and olive oil in a small sauce pan on low heat until combined.

Step 3: Pour the butter and olive oil mixture into a small bowl to prevent it from continuously heating in the pot. Add minced garlic, paprika, and parsley to the butter and olive oil mixture and mix everything.

Step 4: Spread the mixture on both sides of the bread. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the buttered bread slices on it.

Step 5: Bake in a preheated oven* to 180 degrees C (356 degrees F) for 10-15 minutes, depending on how brown and crispy you want the bread to be. I prefer a golden brown colour for this homemade garlic bread.
If you want cheesy flavour you can put grated chees on the top of the bread 5 minutes before finish.
*If you have an air fryer, you can successfully do this in that device, but reduce the temperature to 170 degrees C (338 F) and the baking time to 5-8 minutes.

Sides To Serve
Sourdough Garlic Bread is perfect for soups. I especially recommend it for roasted red pepper gouda soup or any other creamy soup. It will also be great for all kinds of chicken stew, such as chicken ala king or chicken fricassee. For vegetable lovers, I recommend it for vegetable stew. For other dishes from Indian cuisine, it will be a perfect substitute for naan bread.

How to store garlic bread
I do not recommend storing already-made garlic bread because it will be more toasted when reheated, but you can cut it into cubes and make croutons from it by toasting it more. You can store these croutons in an airtight container for up to a week.
