Quick and easy sourdough garlic bread is crispy on the outside and delicately soft on the inside, so your taste buds will experience all those senses of croutons and bread dipped in olive oil.
The taste of garlic bread reminds me of the sun of Italy and good quality olive oil, which is perfectly noticeable in it. It also has a French note because olive oil is mixed with butter, a flagship ingredient of this cuisine.
Sourdough Garlic Bread is toasted bread in an herb and garlic sauce. It is perfect for adding flavor to soups, meat stews, or vegetables.
How to choose the best ingredients for Sourdough Garlic Bread
Sourdough loaf – The best will be a good-quality. Of course, if you can, you can make your homemade sourdough bread. If you don’t have this type of bread, you can use any bread you have, and it can also be French bread or toast bread.
Extra virgin olive oil—Olive oil will be best, but if you don’t have it, you can successfully replace it with any vegetable oil suitable for use at high temperatures; you can also use avocado oil for a healthier version if you have it.
Butter – I mix olive oil with butter to enhance the flavor, but if you don’t have or use butter, you can successfully replace this part with olive oil.
Garlick—I prefer fresh garlic, but you can also use garlic powder if you don’t have it.
Paprika Powder– If you like, you can mix regular paprika with, for example, smokey paprika powder or add a little chili powder.
Parsley Leaves – I also use fresh, but you can also use the frozen or dried version.
Tips and tricks
- If you have old bread and don’t want to throw it away, you can ideally make garlic bread out of it.
- You can also cut the bread into slices and freeze it to make garlic bread as needed.
- To enhance the extra flavor, you can add grated parmesan (for this amount, you will need about one tablespoon of grated parmesan)
- You can sprinkle hard cheese like gouda, cheedar, or montrey jack for more cheesy sourdough garlic bread.
- For a different taste, you can use roasted garlic.
Sourdough Garlic Bread step-by-step instructions
You will need a small saucepan to melt the butter and heat the oil, a brush (I recommend silicone versions; they are more durable) to brush the bread with the mixture, a baking sheet, a piece of parchment paper, and, of course, a sharp knife.
Step 1: Cut six slices of bread. Peel and finely chop the garlic cloves or mince. If you have fresh parsley, wash it, pat it dry with a paper towel, and chop it finely.
Step 2: Melt the butter and olive oil in a small sauce pan on low heat until combined.
Step 3: Pour the butter and olive oil mixture into a small bowl to prevent it from continuously heating in the pot. Add minced garlic, paprika, and parsley to the butter and olive oil mixture and mix everything.
Step 4: Spread the mixture on both sides of the bread. Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the buttered bread slices on it.
Step 5: Bake in a preheated oven* to 180 degrees C (356 degrees F) for 10-15 minutes, depending on how brown and crispy you want the bread to be. I prefer a golden brown colour for this homemade garlic bread.
If you want cheesy flavour you can put grated chees on the top of the bread 5 minutes before finish.
*If you have an air fryer, you can successfully do this in that device, but reduce the temperature to 170 degrees C (338 F) and the baking time to 5-8 minutes.
Sides To Serve
Sourdough Garlic Bread is perfect for soups. I especially recommend it for roasted red pepper gouda soup or any other creamy soup. It will also be great for all kinds of chicken stew, such as chicken ala king or chicken fricassee. For vegetable lovers, I recommend it for vegetable stew. For other dishes from Indian cuisine, it will be a perfect substitute for naan bread.
How to store garlic bread
I do not recommend storing already-made garlic bread because it will be more toasted when reheated, but you can cut it into cubes and make croutons from it by toasting it more. You can store these croutons in an airtight container for up to a week.
