Moussaka

Fancy a bit of Greece at home? You must try this easy and healthy eggplant casserole. It can be reheated, making it perfect for lunch at work.

Moussaka, or Eggplant Lasagna, is one of my favorite recipes. I also refer to it as eggplant lasagna. My version includes a tomato meat sauce and grilled eggplants. I initially tried it with a layer of potatoes, but I found that it didn’t suit my taste. This version of moussaka can be used successfully in diets where a small amount of carbohydrates is recommended, such as low-carb or keto diets.

The original recipe used béchamel sauce, which I replaced with sour cream, egg, and spices. This change results in a lighter and more flavorful eggplant casserole.

How to choose the best ingredients for Moussaka

Eggplant: The freshest eggplants have smooth, unblemished skin and smaller ones are less bitter..

Tomatoes: For the best results, use fresh tomatoes for the sauce. If you don’t have fresh tomatoes, you can use canned tomatoes, whether they are whole or chopped. In a pinch, tomato paste can be used, but it will alter the flavor and quality of the dish. Tomato paste is highly processed and should only be used as a last resort.

Tips and Tricks for Moussaka

  • In the end, cover the moussaka with aluminum foil to prevent over-baking.
  • You can prepare a larger quantity of moussaka, for example for two meals, and it can be easily reheated in either an oven or a microwave.

Moussaka

Moussaka is a simple dish, I can say such a lasagna, only instead of pasta you give grilled eggplants.

Ingredients
  

Tomato meat sauce

  • 3 eggplant
  • 500 gr mince meat mix beef – pork
  • 2-3 cloves garlic
  • 1 onion
  • 5 tomatoes
  • 0.5 tsp oregano
  • 0.5 tsp basil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • vegetable oil

Sauce

  • 300 ml sour cream
  • 1 egg
  • 50 gr your favourite cheese like cheddar, gouda

Instructions
 

Tomato meat sauce

  • Cut the eggplants lengthwise into thin slices, put them on a paper towel and sprinkle with salt to get the taste of bitterness from them.
  • In the meantime, we make the meat sauce. Fry the onions in the pan, add the garlic, finely chopped or pressed through the press.
  • Add the meat and stir everything until the meat is ready
  • Add peeled and diced tomatoes, mix everything.
  • When meat is ready
  • We wait until liquid droplets appear, collect eggplant liquid with a paper towel.
  • Grill the eggplants
  • Take a casserole dish and put
  • Layer meat and eggplants, the last layer is to be made of meat.
  • Pour the cream sauce.
  • Bake for about 60 minutes at 180
